Mary Kay Coleman
As a lifelong resident of the Tri-Cities, Mary Kay Coleman’s knowledge of the area is golden. She has enjoyed a successful career in real estate for over 40 years while serving and helping thousands of families.
Her career in real estate began in 1975 as a salesperson for Woodhaven Lakes, selling vacation home properties. After determining that she wanted to pursue real estate full time, Mary Kay began working in local residential sales and helped open the Thorsen Real Estate office in St. Charles. In 1979, she was one of the pioneers in the transition to RE/MAX, the new exciting unparalleled franchise. Mary Kay managed the RE/MAX St. Charles office for 5 years where she helped build the office from 17 to 30 agents and it became the #1 office in the area. In the 90’s, she transitioned to working only as an agent to better serve her clients. She prides herself as being the oldest continuous RE/MAX agent in the Fox Valley and continues to love working for the #1 RE/MAX franchise because of the global name recognition and the top agents she has worked with throughout the years. Her awards include Fox Valley Realtor of the Year in 1993, RE/MAX Hall of Fame in 1993, and the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.
Mary Kay, the oldest of four, was born and raised in Geneva. Her father was the beloved Ken Payleitner, principal of Harrison Street School for 32 years. She attended St. Peter School where she was in the first graduating class. During high school, her family moved to St. Charles while she attended the amazing Mount St. Mary Academy. She went on to graduate from Northern Illinois University with a degree in communications. One of her favorite memories at Northern, during the 1973-74 school year, was being Victor E. Huskie, the mascot for the NIU sports teams.
Spending time with family is one of Mary Kay’s cherished activities. Time spent with her daughter, son-in-law and four grandchildren often includes travel to Florida and Michigan. Recently, she took the two older grandkids on a Road Scholar trip (learning adventures geared for grandparents and grandkids) to Mount Rushmore. On a scale of 1-10, the kids said the trip was a 10! Mary Kay has also traveled with the Northern Illinois Alumni Association, just returning from Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, and enjoys venturing out to her favorite Arizona.
Mary Kay believes in giving back to the community. She has served on the board of the Geneva Community Chest for the past 15+ years, raising funds for over twenty social service charities that help those in need in the Fox Valley. She has also volunteered with Fox Valley Hospice and was on the board of the Geneva Academic Foundation. Mary Kay was on the Finance Council at St. John Neumann and spent several years in Youth Group Leadership.
For Mary Kay, the best part of her career has been the families that she has worked with over the years. Over 75% of Mary Kay’s business every year is repeat or referral transactions. She is fortunate to work with generations of families –“it’s not uncommon to sell a home to the children of a former client and then help that client to downsize to stay close to their grandchildren.” Mary Kay works with office and transaction manager, Amy Nichols, who has over 25 years of experience in marketing, finance, and real estate. Together, Mary Kay and Amy work hard to educate clients so there are no surprises during the process. They provide thoughtful staging and winning photography for all of their listings and love matching up buyers and sellers, creating a win-win for all.
